Korean Down Perm for Men: Flat Sides, Less Styling

Short answer: a down perm is a Korean men’s perm that makes the hair on your sides and back lie flat instead of puffing out. It is popular with men whose side hair sticks out after a haircut, and it cuts down on daily styling. At J. The problem it fixes

Many men, especially with thick or straight Asian hair, know the feeling: a week after a good haircut, the hair above the ears starts to stick out. Wax and hairspray help for a few hours, then it springs back.

A down perm works on that hair directly. It relaxes the hair so it grows and sits downwards, close to the head. The result is a cleaner outline and a neater shape that holds without much product.

How a down perm works

It is a short, focused service:

1. Consultation. Your stylist looks at how your hair grows on the sides and back, and how it fits with your cut.
2. Application. A perm product is applied to the target area only, usually the sides, the back, or both.
3. Shaping. The hair is combed and pressed flat so it sets in the downward direction.
4. Rinse and finish. The product is rinsed, and the hair is dried and styled.

Because only part of the head is treated, a down perm is quicker and more affordable than a full perm.

Pairing it with other services

A down perm works well on its own, but it is often part of a bigger refresh.

• With a haircut. A men’s cut ranges from $68 (Artist) to $128 (Creative Director). A fresh cut plus a down perm gives the cleanest result.
• With a Men’s Perm. For texture on top and flat, neat sides, pair a down perm with a Men’s Perm ($238 short, $278 medium) or a Men’s Iron Perm ($258 short, $298 medium).

Is a down perm right for you?

A down perm is a good fit if:

• Your side or back hair sticks out, even soon after a cut
• You want a neat look with less wax or spray each morning
• You wear short styles such as a two-block, crop or side part

It may not be needed if your hair already lies flat, or if you are growing your hair long. Your stylist will tell you honestly during the consultation.

Caring for your down perm

• Avoid washing for the first day, or as your stylist advises, so the shape can settle.
• Dry downwards. When blow-drying, point the air down along the sides rather than up.
• Go easy on heavy products. You should need much less than before.
• Book a check with your next cut. As new hair grows in, the sides can lift again. How long it lasts depends on your hair type and how fast it grows.
