Setting Perm vs Natural Perm: Which Korean Perm Suits You?
Setting (digital) perm or natural (basic) perm? How the two Korean perms differ, who each suits, prices and aftercare, from J. Seoul in Orchard.

Short answer: a setting perm (also called a digital perm) uses heat to create soft, defined waves that look best when your hair is dry. A natural perm (also called a basic perm or cold perm) works without heat and gives a softer, looser movement. The right one depends on your hair length, condition and how much styling you want to do each day.
Both are Korean perms, which means the goal is natural-looking movement rather than tight curls. Here is how they compare, and how to choose at J. Seoul in Orchard.
First, a quick note on names
You may see “setting perm”, “digital perm” and “heat perm” used for the same thing. Setting perm is the Korean name, and digital perm is the name you will see more often in Singapore. At J. Seoul they are one service, listed as Setting / Digital Perm on our price list.
The other main option is the Natural / Basic Perm, which is a cold perm.
What is a setting (digital) perm?
A setting perm uses heated rods to set the shape of the curl. The heat helps the wave hold its form, so the curl shows most clearly when your hair is dry.
That makes it a good match if you:
- Want visible, bouncy waves or C-curls at the ends
- Prefer to air-dry or scrunch your hair and go, with little blow-drying
- Have medium to long hair, where the weight of the hair suits a defined wave
What is a natural (basic) perm?
A natural perm uses a perm solution at room temperature, with no heated rods. The curl usually looks most defined when your hair is damp and relaxes into a softer movement as it dries.
That makes it a good match if you:
- Want subtle body and texture rather than obvious waves
- Have shorter hair, or want movement at the roots and crown
- Are happy to style with a little product to bring out the curl

How to choose
There is no single “better” perm. It comes down to four things:
- The look you want. Defined waves point to a setting perm. Soft body points to a natural perm.
- Your hair length. Longer hair often holds a setting perm well. Shorter hair often suits a natural perm.
- Your hair condition. Dry, coloured or bleached hair needs a careful plan. Your stylist may suggest a treatment first.
- Your morning routine. If you want to wash and go, tell your stylist. It changes which perm and which curl size they recommend.
This is why every perm at J. Seoul starts with a consultation. Your stylist looks at your hair and scalp, talks through the look you want, and then recommends the perm, curl size and any treatment that will help.

Caring for your perm
How long a perm lasts depends on your hair type and how you look after it at home. Curls loosen gradually, so good care makes a real difference.
- Wait before washing. Ask your stylist how long to wait, usually a day or two.
- Use gentle products. A mild shampoo and a good conditioner help keep the hair soft.
- Dry with care. Pat with a towel rather than rubbing. For a setting perm, scrunch and air-dry or use a diffuser.
- Add a weekly treatment to keep the hair healthy.
- Come back for a check. Your stylist can see how the perm is holding and advise when to refresh it.
A salon treatment such as our Keratin Recovery or Rebuild Clinic can help keep permed hair strong.

Frequently asked
Is a setting perm the same as a digital perm?
Yes. Setting perm is the name used in Korea, and digital perm is the name often used in Singapore. Both use heated rods to set the curl. At J. Seoul they are the same service, listed as Setting / Digital Perm.
How long does a Korean perm last?
It depends on your hair type and how you care for it at home. Curls loosen gradually over time. We recommend coming back so your stylist can check how the perm is holding and advise on the next step.
Which perm is better for damaged hair?
Your stylist will check your hair first. If it is dry or damaged, we may suggest a treatment such as Keratin Recovery Clinic or Rebuild Clinic before or alongside the perm to protect the hair.
Can I perm hair that is already coloured?
Often yes, but it depends on the condition of your hair. Bleached or very damaged hair needs extra care, so your stylist will assess it during your consultation before recommending a perm.
How much does a setting perm cost at J. Seoul?
A Setting / Digital Perm is $358 for short hair, $398 for medium and $438 for long hair. A Natural / Basic Perm is $338, $378 and $418. Prices are before 9% GST, and extra-long hair adds $50.
